It’s going to be a hot one this summer.  Austinites tend to forget how hot it gets in the summer.  Then we are all surprised when it’s 100 degrees in May.  The other seasons are so mild that you might not believe they exist here.  The porch has been taken over by mosquitos when there is no breeze making it unbearable outside.  Taking the kids to the park is good until 10 am.  The lake is scorching if you aren’t floating on a tube.  So I’ve decided that this is going to be the Summer of Sewing.  Kind of like the summer of love, but not so much.

First up, ruffles.

For some reason, when I sew I don’t start with beginner projects.  A simple skirt would have suited her just fine, but that’s not how I roll.  I like to make things complicated and give my seam ripper and sewing machine equal time.  I don’t want the seam ripper to feel left out so he got plenty of action with this outfit.  I made the skirt following this pattern found on the Grand Revival website.

I’d seen the idea for this style of top all over the place and I like the vintage feel it gives a plain white tank top.  I found the white top at Old Navy and just made up the rest as I went along.

I’d love for you to join me in the Summer of Sewing.  Grab yourself your beverage of choice, mine happens to be sparkling lemonade since margaritas are out of the question, and get to sewing.  It only takes browsing the blogs for a few minutes to be completely and totally inspired.

aw, *shucks*. That skirt turned out adorable, too.

(My seam ripper gets a lot of playtime. So much so that I have had to buy several because I wear them out. No lie.)

100 degrees seems so warm….we are lucky here if it gets to 75 for maybe 3 days over the summer and seems to hover between 58 and 65 the rest of the time. It’s may and we haven’t had temperatures much over 55 yet! We are being promised a dry summer and hopefully a warmish one – the last 2 having been wet and miserable – so I plan to be outdoors as much as possible, but when I am not I’ll be checking in to see what you have made (the skirt is fabulous) and doing a little sewing of my own!

Margaritas and sewing just don’t mix. Don’t ask me how I know that.

It looks super super cute! You did a great job.

I’m pretty sure I’ll be watching from the sidelines ;) *** Makena looks so cute.

Super cute – what a great little model!

We have Summer’s like that, too. Where you have to go to the park at 7am, and then scurry back inside to cool down until it’s okay to leave the house again at 4pm!
But now, its cold and tipping into Winter (which in contrast to some places is quite mild; but for us is still cold!).
I’d love to join your Summer of sewing. Will we have weekly (monthly) projects list to follow. What fun!

I always think that using the seam ripper (we call it a quick unpick) is a good break form hunching over the sewing machine.

You rock! Seriously, Jade … the outfit is so cute I just might want another baby girl so I can dress her up!

I’m thinking that margaritas and seam rippers/quick unpickers don’t mix either! Call me biased but I’m thinking the Summer of Sewing should include Craft Hope. So how about a doll? :)
