Winter’s Bounty
It always seems to amaze when I drive past the local farmer’s market and there are tomatoes for sale. It’s February and around these parts, tomato season ended in September. Today, curiosity got the best of me and I decided to stop, take a look around, ask a few questions and get some farm fresh veggies for dinner.
There were so many fresh fruits and veggies, had I not known any better I would have thought it was summer. I browsed around for a while, asked some questions about what I should plant in my own garden and found out the origins of the foods.
We ended up stocking up for a few days with tomatoes, asparagus, strawberries and whole grain bread. I couldn’t even get the food into the car before Makena was begging for strawberries. She had eaten three before I could corral her into the car. Keegan, on the other hand, was still lurking around the market stand trying to reach the tomatoes.
Here’s what I found out… The tomatoes are from Marfa, Texas which is near the Texas/Mexico border. The asparagus is from Northern California. I can’t remember where the strawberries are from but the lady who operates the market makes the bread fresh daily at home. All of this fresh goodness got me thinking about what we feed our family and changes we need to make.
As we drove away Keegan had a piece of bread he was chewing on and Makena was devouring the strawberries. So fresh, so good and so good for you. This weekend, weather permitting, I’m going to get working on my vegetable garden. It will be a family project, we’ll all have roles. My kids wouldn’t have it any other way.
